Electric Jeep Wrangler 4xe to Arrive

Written by Dave Smith Motors

The Jeep Wrangler is about to get even better with the addition of the Wrangler 4xe. With this new Wrangler, 4xe drivers can expect the most capable and advanced Wrangler of all time, and buyers can purchase this new and amazing Wrangler as early as 2021. What exactly is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe? It's a plug-in hybrid powertrain that takes the powerful 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and adds hybrid elements to provide up to 25 miles of silent, electronic-only propulsion. This new electric engine combines nicely with the open-air experience that Jeep fans have come to know and love. There is a lot more to say about the Wrangler 4xe. Continue reading as we go over all the Wrangler 4xe has to offer!

About the new powertrain

The all-new Wrangler 4xe uses two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack with the turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, and the Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission. All of this is used to provide drivers with up to 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. This high-tech direct-inject engine comes with a twin-scroll and low-inertia turbocharger, which mounts directly to the cylinder head. There is even a dedicated cooling circuit that works for the turbocharger to improve both the performance and fuel economy. The engine also uses a 12-volt battery to run all of the accessories.

A battery pack that improves the interior

The Wrangler 4xe comes with a 400-volt, 17-kWh, 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack with controls mounted underneath the second-row seat, where it stays nicely tucked away from all the weather and road elements. The second-row seat has been designed to allow the bottom cushion to be flipped forward so that drivers can access the battery. With this hybrid system, you can expect a Dual Charging Module, which uses the battery charger and combines it with a  DC/DC converter to a single unit for more compactness. These high-voltage components, such as the wiring between the battery pack and electric motors, are sealed in a waterproof container. Also, an LED battery level monitor is mounted on the instrument panel's top, making it easier to check the battery's status right on the dashboard.

Selec modes

The Wrangler 4xe comes tailored to you on every trip as there are three different modes of operation available known as the E Selec. The driver can choose between any of these options via buttons mounted on the instrument panel, located to the left of the steering wheel. Starting these modes is the hybrid mode, which is also known as the default mode. This mode will always use the battery power first and then mix in power from the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine when the battery reaches a certain charge level. The next mode is the electric mode, which allows the engine to coast on zero-emission electric power only until the battery reaches a minimum state of charge or the driver needs more torque. At this point, the turbocharged four-cylinder is engaged. The last available mode is the eSave mode, which prioritizes the turbocharged four-cylinders power while saving the battery for later use or off-roading. The driver can also choose between a Battery Save or Battery Charge via the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect monitor.
