What are Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems?
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are electronic systems that assist drivers with steering, braking, and parking functions. ADAS systems use sophisticated imaging sensors, such as radar and cameras, to detect nearby obstacles and determine if a collision is about to occur. If so, corrective actions are taken.
Are they really needed?
Well, cars years ago didn't have driver-assistance systems but one would have to wonder how many lives would have been saved if they did. Today, they are endorsed by safety organizations world-wide.
What are the ADAS technologies in Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers?
Stellantis has outfitted a suite of ADAS systems in the Wagoneers. These include Intersection Collision Assist, Active Driving Assist, Hands-free Active Driving Assist, and the ParkSense Automated Parking System. Here's how they work:
Intersection Collision Assist - This system detects vehicles on a crossroad that approach from the driver's right or left. Four radar sensors determine if a collision is about to occur and immediately issues audible and visual alerts. If the driver does not respond, the system automatically activates the vehicle's brakes.
Active Driving Assist - The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are available with Active Driving Assist for hands-on-wheel and eyes-on-road automated driving using lane-centering control. The system senses when a vehicle is drifting out of it's lane and applies corrective actions.
Hands-free Active Driving Assist - is projected to be available in 2022 and offers hands-off driving and lane centering. The system will predictively slow the vehicle down in tight curves, automatically resume control, and then verify that the driver is alert and paying attention.
ParkSense automated parking system - With ParkSense, the vehicle steers into a parking space with minimal help from the driver. Using special sensors, the processor determines the location of the car in respect to a parking space and guides the driver into the spot. As the vehicle shifts into reverse, the backup camera is triggered, allowing drivers to see through multiple cameras.
