Remember, your tires are the only thing that separates you from the open road, so they need to be properly maintained. Here are some services that we offer and how important they are for your Ram.

Check tire pressure

Poor tire pressure is the most common cause of tire failure. If your tires aren't properly inflated, they will be subjected to tire stress, irregular wear and can cause you to lose control of your Ram, which can cause an accident. One thing to consider is that there are times where your tire may not appear to be flat, but in actuality, it may have lost 50% of its air pressure! This is a reason that you always need to check your Ram's tire pressure. If you perform the eyeball test and think everything is fine, your tires may be going flat! If you plan on checking your tire pressure yourself, all you need is a tire gauge; make sure that you are checking your tire pressure when the tires are cool. Don't forget to check your spare tire as well!

Tire alignment

Alignment is important when you are taking care of your Ram's tires. If your tires have poor alignment, it can cause your Ram to pull to one side and cause the steering wheel to shake uncontrollably. When you hit the curb or run over a pothole, it can cause your alignment to be thrown out of wack, which will cause wear on your tires. If your tires are wearing unevenly, they are more susceptible to a blowout or a shortened life span. You should periodically have our experts here at Dave Smith Motors check your alignment and have your tires realigned if necessary!

Rotate your tires

You should always rotate your Ram's tires regularly so that they will wear evenly and have a longer life. Normally, your tires should be rotated every 5,000 miles. Rotating your Ram's tires means that you need to switch your tires in a pattern among the vehicle's wheel positions. This is a critical task as your front tires have more responsibility than the rear tires. Different types of tires also have different weights. Doing regular tire rotations will also slow down uneven tread wear by evening out the differences. A commonly used pattern when rotating your tires on front-wheel-drive is to move the tires in an X-pattern. The left front tire trades places with the right rear, and the right front trades places with the left rear.

Measure your tread

It would be best if you got in the habit of regularly checking your tire tread. If the tread on your Ram's tires are wearing rapidly in spots or wearing unusually, this could mean that your Ram doesn't have as great a grip on the road and could create some unsafe conditions. Ask our experts here at Dave Smith Motors how your tire tread looks during routine tire rotations or alignment checks. Your Ram's tires will need to be replaced if they are worn down to 1/16th of an inch. There is a test that will let you know if you are driving around with the right amount of tread. Take a penny and place it in the tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, then you need to get new tires. Most newer Ram's have built on tread indicators, so you know when you need a new set.
