About Spokane Washington
Founded in 1873, Spokane sits in eastern Washington along the Spokane River. It is the largest city and county seat of Spokane County. It is also the second-largest city in Washington, behind Seattle. J.J. Downing and S.R. Scranton were the first American settlers in the land that is now Spokane. In 1871, they established a sawmill at the falls of the river. As James N. Glover, a man traveling from Oregon was passing through, he noticed the value of its location near the river banks, which could be used as water power for mills. He purchased the land and the mill from the pair in 1873 for $4,000. Spokane grew exponentially during the 1883 gold rush and continued until August 4, 1889, when a fire broke out and left 32 blocks of downtown Spokane in rubble. The town was rebuilt and reincorporated under the name Spokane. Mining declined in the early parts of the 20th century, while agriculture and logging were the main influences of Spokane's economy. In present-day Spokane, the city is taking a turn to a more service-oriented economy. Modern Spokane is also home to many arts and history museums.
